I never understood why bands feel the need to re-record their hit tunes. They are rarely if ever better than the original...

ask the sabbath producers? ;)

rocko, I saw a case of 'hair has to go' not long ago. the guy looked really great with the shoulder-length hair, but in the 'serious job' he got, it had to get shorn. :(. still looking ok, but the long hair made him look better! just my opinion.

26 seconds of sabbath folloowed by over 6 minutes of poison unplugged.....Thats just not right!

One word: MONEY!!! Usually the hit songs early in one band's career are owned by the record company (recording rights, but not performance rights) and if they use that exact same recorded version, who gets paid?!? The record company.

Since the bands usually own the rights to the music & lyrics, they can re-record it on probably their own "self-control" record label and get all the rights to it...which means more money for the artist. Not really a bad thing for them, but the fans end up forking out more money.

Warrant ("Lastest & Greatest") and Great White ("Now & Then") have done it as well as even Testament ("First Strike Is Deadly") ... and don't even get me started on Ozzy's first (2) discs -- he re-recorded the drums & bass parts to eliminate paying any further performance royalties to the band members at the time... then Megadeth's re-recorded "tweeks" of their entire early catalog and then released as "remastered" (the originals were perfect, but Mega-Dave had something against Dave, Jr.).

...and of course I can't forget Slick's favorite, Poison.

DD, thats my second fave band, you know how much I love Steelheart!!
"Haven't been that big a fan of Ozzy after the Randy albums. By the time Zakk was in teh band, Ozzy was just too poppy for me! Not saying Zakk is a poppy guitarist. BY THE WAY, WHY ISN'T THERE ANY BLS IN THE CATALOG???
Dedicated by:
MysticMadman (Steve)"

Steve, it's in the "z" catalog, not the "b" catalog as Zakk Wylde's Black Label Society.
> At least Metallica did not re-record Kill 'Em All!!! If I'm in a Metal band the main focus is how do we sound live!! In the studio all kind of tricks can be achieved, pitch shifter, studio musicians,etc..

Um, just about all those tricks can be achieved live too.
