Interesting to see how the bands are rated. I see a lot of 3s and 4s I think should be upgraded. I think this shows that with some work a lot of the current problems/gripes will go away.

One question: can individual albums be given ratings or only bands? For example, Scorpions are obviously a 1 as an artist, but their album Eye II Eye with its techno beats and whatnot is a 3 at best.

Keir - that's why I posted the list to let people suggest changes. Rather than just bitch about it, why not give the system half a chance - and work to improve/correct it

I think we could do albums with a little work (heck or even songs). I'm not going to go there yet, though...I don't have much hide left right now

In rating bands, here's how I look at things:

1. Core bands that everyone knows! The bands that made it the 80's and the 70's bands that had a huge impact on Hard Rock/Metal of the 80's. Gold and Platinum artists.

2. Bands from the 80's that were part of the scene, but didn't quite make it. Newer bands that were influenced by and carry the torch for 80's Hard Rock/Metal bands. 70's bands that didn't quite make it, but did have some impact.

3. Bands that are more obscure to most Hard Rock/Metal fans, but are known the Hardcore minority of Hard Rock/Metal fans (People like us!).

4. Fridge artists and the extremely obscure bands that almost nobody knows (we all have bands that each one of us loves, but nobody has heard of).

I look at them completely different.

1. Any band from the 80's (give em 1978 to 1992) is an instant 1. (thats where they start) and then graded down depending on who they are and what music they put out. For instance, every NWoBHM band started with a 1 (for being an 80's band to start with) but in the instance for a band like Predatur they were downgraded to a 3 because they are more of a rockabilly or blues rock. Blackfoot or .38 Special would start at a 1 immediately but down to a 2 because they are southern rock and we dont do a lot of there.

2. Are the downgraded 1's. Plus some true 80's metal bands from Euro or some very obscure thrash band from LA. The more obscure bands in general that are still from the 80s

3. Bands that we have on here that rock, no doubt, but IMHO really dont belong here since either A) they are not an 80s band, B)They are more symphonic metal or Euro Metal and not from the 80s, C)A band from the 2000's that have 1 member from some band no one ever heard of back in the 80s and really dont sound 80s but we have them here because of that one dude etc...

4. Dont belong on here period.

Thats just how i graded them.

... and it's cool that we all have different points of view. Chris has the fun part of taking all of these points of view and plugging them in to make his station the best it can be.

I would agree Helloween could be a 2. Omen, yeah, and Overkill. Saxon should be a 1. Warrior (dont know which Warrior it is, dont we have like 50?) Angel Witch could go to a 2, yeah. Jag Panzer i think a 3. Most of the others i know little about other than Running Wild. A few i have never heard of but yeah, this is always good for discussion. Can get some of the bands like this that should have been rated higher, to be higher. With as many bands as we had, some fell through the cracks.

I agree that Saxon should be a 1, but as there is currently no difference between 1 and 2 I said 2 for simplicity's sake. Warrior is the "Fighting For The Earth" Warrior. Jag Panzer probably falls into that grey area where the earlier albums are 2s and the later, more modern sounding ones are 3s. For now can we get it up to a 3?

I agree with you guys about Saxon being a 1 and Helloween being a 2. The rest not so much.

My reply in the Music Contributors thread pretty much agreed with some of this topic.

The ratings do not say anything about obscurity so that should not be a factor in determining the rating. If a band had one album, and it fits the format perfectly, why would it be a 4?

I feel this is all about fitting format, not about how popular a band was. If I am incorrect, than the definitions need to be revised (similar to what RCC mentioned).

For the most part I think i agree with RCC's rating logic.

I took Chris's list and resorted it by rating from 1 - 4 and agree with the ratings for the most part (IMO the 80s thrash bands (Testamant, Overkill, Death Angel,etc) should be considered 1's along with Anthrax, Slayer, Megadeth and Pantera) but realistically I'm just glad to have a site available to listen to and request great tunes.

Just my two cents...

I guess my biggest problem today with it is the inconsistent nature of the ratings. CrashDiet listed as a 1 but Crazy Lixx a 3??? Although I disagree with Grinder on the validity of the 3's his logic is spot on otherwise. But tagging all the NEW more power metal groups as 3's would be fine. Why is Pantera a 1?

Although I am a big fan of Halestorm they dont even belong on the site and yet the 80's era ZZ Top is not allowed at all?

Anyway - it is a great debate and I am a little calmer today about the whole thing but some adjustments need to happen. I have a deep love for the one-offs (or close) of the late 80's into 1992 - Bands like Outlaw Blood, Noisy Mama, McQueen Street, Wildside just arrived to the party to late but put out some outstanding albums. Many of them got tagged 4's more so I feel because of the unknown than anything else.

I also hear you about ZZ Top, etc...I do think with the new levels, we can incorporate more of those type of artists to the site...

Anyway, there are probably a lot of artists that can be changed. I went thru the list pretty quickly and while I may recognize a song or two if I'd heard them from an artist, if I couldn't recognize it it may have gotten a 3 or 4...So, I have some good feedback from others and will be looking at making some changes and re-posting the revised list.

Hey Dale. I 100% agree that Wraith (UK), Wrath, Wrathchild and Wrathchild America should all be changed to 2s. Wolfbane, ironically, is a 2 even though they do fit the category of demo quality NWOBHM. I wonder if Chris was thinking of Wolfsbane (who are a 3 but should be a 2).
