Welcome to the Old School Metal Show here on Hardrockin80s.com with DJ Grinder as he spins the finest rock and heavy metal from the era of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal that was taking the world by storm in the late 70's to the mid 80's.
The movement of the NWOBHM started as the title suggests, over in the UK and Eruope back in the late 70's in response to the growing popularity of punk and new wave music. Bands such as Mythra, Saxon, Black Sabbath and so on brought certainly a disctinctive alternative to punk and new wave. From those humble roots, the era of Heavy Metal was born and we are all the better for it.
One of the first radio shows to support and play bands from the NWOBHM was the Friday Night Radio Show on BBC radio. They catered to the studio and session tracks from the up and coming metal and rock bands. On each friday night, you would hear music from bands such as Deep Purple, Quartz and the Handsome Beasts. The great thing about this show was that it had a more underground feel to it. Something today would be a local FM radio show playing local rock bands in an hour long or so showcase.
A more accurate definition of NWOBHM can be found at Metal-Reference.com given in a historical timeline.
So there you have a good reference of what The Old School Metal Show is about. We will be featuring as many of the bands from the NWOBHM that we can find. Many of the bands only put out a song or two and finding that music is an extremely difficult task as you could imagine. DJ Flame has put forth a hell of an effort in finding a lot of the music. We have been in touch with as many of the bands that are still around and have a website, many graciously offering to share their music with us and for that, we are very thankful here at the station. It is our intention to showcase the bands that paved the way for the music we love here on this station, the metal and rock from the 80s. Outside of the UK and Europe, these bands were not widely recognized and this is a total shame. Just by listening to the tracks, you can hear the talent and passion they had for their music and any music that has passion behind it, deserves to be heard. Well, except Metallica's latest album.
We are not the only station out there playing the bands from the NWOBHM. There is a show over on Metal Gods which has a long history of playing these bands. Their library is very extensive, something we will have here as well over time. Goblin, the guy who owns Metal Gods has offered his talents and advice to me here for this show, and I thank him very much for his efforts.
The Old School Metal Show is slated to air a new show each Friday at 6pm eastern standard time, with the show being repeated at various times during the next week. Times for the show repeats have not been decided on at this time, but check back to this page in the future for those times.
The producers of this show, me, have way to many people to thank for helping in creation of this show, but they know who they are as i have thanked them personally, countless times so stick around and give the show a listen. I can assure you that if you are a fan of metal, you will not be dissapointed by this show.
