It's no mystery that most if not all the of the best metal releases the past few years have been from the bands that are the vets of the metal industry including these guys, Megadeth, Metallica, Judss Priest, Stryper, Metal Church, Maiden, etc. The "new" bands, honestly, just are not at this level and maybe never will be.

Sorry 'skulls I have to disagree with you! While the new albums from those bands are good I feel they're missing a lot of the passion that newer bands have. Bands like High Spirits, Night Demon, Visigoth, or Dark Forest might never be on the same level talent-wise but they make up for it with the heart they put into their work. I'll make an exception for Metal Church since the return of Mike Howe brought a certain energy back to the band, but the last few Maiden and Metallica albums bored me.

There seems to be opinions on both sides of the bands I mentioned. Some hate the newer albums, they want Master of Puppets 2.0 for every album or Powerslave again and again, etc. I can understand this to a point, but I like when bands progress and evolve. Sometimes this is good, sometimes not. Being a big fan of melodic metal in general, I love that Metallica, Anthrax and Maiden have brought melodic structures (honestly these guys always had some even from the get go) as a big part of their sounds. Some find this boring, and some, like myself, like that the tunes are deeper in layout than just warp speed start to end (although that is ok now and again still!).

Stryper as example sounds better than ever, the last two albums are amazing, the last Judas Priest was an amazing mix of old school JP and "Angel". Love it. I admittingly (spl?) am slightly biased on many of the bands I love, we all are and if you say your not, you lie!, but the biggest fans are often the hardest critics too. So I don't think I fall into a category of just loving these albums because they are from fave bands, all have albums that I like more or less than others. And there are bands that I used to follow very closely that I don't listen too anymore because I do not like the direction they went.

As for new bands, I try and explore new bands and there is so much sometimes it's hard to really narrow anything down. This is truest in power metal, wow, there are thousands of bands it seems. But I do try and listen to things that lead me to new stuff (like Sam Dunn's Banger.TV on Youtube where there is a huge community of fans that talk about everything under the sun). Most of what I hear, well is like what you said about the old bands, the stuff is usually boring to me. I think the only recent band I have grasped onto as being a really credible band with loads of talent and interest is Havok. Those guys got it figured out indeed; solid, fast and melodic, and deep lyrics but still kick your ass!

I'll have to dig up the bands you mentioned, I do not know any of them, and as noted, always interested in hopefully finding something new that is inspiring and worth following.
One thing is for sure, I am glad our "old school" bands are still out there and hammering out tunes. If not they just become cover bands of themselves and really, we don't need anymore of that! But is anyone in the wings to fill the massive shoes of Sabbath, Maiden, Metallica, etc when all of these guys finally hang it up? Haven't seen it yet myself.

BTW, Great to have you back onboard Keir, always fun music conversation bro!

Glad to hear your thoughts as always Chet. To be clear, I don't think the new bands I listen to have the kind of staying power that the classic metal bands had, I'm just enjoying them while they're here. The only new band I listen to that I think people will still be talking about in 10 years is probably Ghost.

Hey now, never said I liked ALL of the old school bands! There are some I would crawl across broken glass on fire to turn down including Kix, Jackyl and Bullet Boys just to name a few

But to be fair, I know there are crew members that would do the same when I spin King Diamond, Kreator and Bon Jovi (even if the pick is off one of the first four albums) :P

I’m going to have to step away soon and wanted to thank everyone for making this the best week at we’ve had at HR80s in many, many years. Several old friends have rejoined us… and that makes the mix that much better! There’s a renewed energy here and it comes from one source… The Day Crew. Let’s make next week even better! So, crank it up and share the Best Metal on the Net with your co-workers, your neighbors and your friends over a few cold ones. Rocké Diem Y’all!

Indeed Doc. As I said on Facebook, "It's like the days of yore." I plan on treating my neighbors to some great HR80s music all weekend, as it's going to be in the 80s, and I'll be firing up the outdoor system for the first time this year.

Love Ghost, just picked up Meliora and it is awesome. A few of us had discussed a few weeks ago how they seemed to have Blue Oyster Cult influence, the slightly commercial vibe, but also really really dark in content.
Saw that Papa ditched all the current members, which is a shame because those guys kicked ass live!
The first album is on here, we should get the others in Sam too!

Brilliant guitar god track!

Saw the UFO show in San Antonio last Saturday and Russ caught them last night. Vinnie absolutely killed it but the set was way to short IMO. The band has a vast catalog and treated us to only an hour of it....

Sure is. KNAC was on my radio in the car, office and home for it's entire run. I still have (and often wear) my KNAC gear.

I have no hate for any of the HR80s players. But song choices, that's called, "heckled by the day crew."

Always metal,
